The anticipation was palpable as art enthusiasts and connoisseurs gathered at the Ben Thanh Art Gallery for the grand opening of "Tíc Tắc Sài Gòn" – a solo exhibition by artist Pham Luan.

The exhibition brings together works that reveal Pham Luan's youthful vision of a city rich in energy and creativity, despite the great challenges the city has endured such as the two-year lock down during the Covid 19 pandemic. Witnessing the gradual revival of Sai Gon right after the city lifted the social distancing order, artist Pham Luan felt strong inspiration to capture the rhythm of the city in each and every precious moment.
Attendees were greeted by captivating by three large-scale painting: Sunset, Lights On, and Weekend. Each piece captures the pulsating energy of Viet Nam’s largest city by decisive brushstrokes and delightful colour palette.
With his trademark Impressionism style, Pham Luan presents not only paintings of Ho Chi Minh City but also paintings of ballet dancers and street dancers. Throughout the exhibitions, viewers can see the connection between landscape, human emotions and the urban culture of the young generations.
“It is very impressive to see an artist who is approaching 70 years of age still passionate pushing the limits of his painting,” an art collector remarked at the opening. “His depiction of the young people dancing really show his power of observation and his skill in capturing the movements and energy of these dancers.”
Through his skillful manipulation of light and shadow, Luan's work breathes life into the canvas, evoking a profound emotional connection that resonates with viewers. This exhibition not only reinforces Luan's status as a gem in Vietnam's vibrant art scene but also provides a mesmerizing journey through Ho Chi Minh City’s vibrant landscape and urban culture.
The “Tíc Tắc Sài Gòn” exhibition is organised by Ben Thanh Art Gallery at 159 Dong Khoi Street - from 24/10 to 31/10/2022. An accompanying art book of the exhibited paintings is published exclusively for this event.
